Mayer State ParkInfo:

With some of the best rain-free weather in the gorge and loaded with amenities, Mayer State Park is a great place to get away from it all. Tucked back off of I-84, there are two great destinations - down by the river (for exceptional picknicking grounds, boat launch, fishing) or up above the river at Rowena Overlook.

The riverside area has several large picnick areas, a great boatlaunch that is seldom full, and a lot of parking. Great views from the river across to Lyle, WA and a great spot for kayaking/canoeing due to the sheltered harbor area.

If you are launching a power boat, be aware that there is a specific channel to the Columbia (E/NE) you will want to take to avoid the abundance of shallow water.

Up above the river (off the Historic Columbia River Highway) is Rowena Overlook which offers some of the most breathtaking views in the Columbia Gorge. Additionally Rowena Overlook provides access to the famous Tom McCall Trail - which is arguably one of the best wildflower hikes in the Gorge.
