Description

HOOD RIVER COUNTY FRUIT LOOP HEIRLOOM APPLE CELEBRATION

October 27 - 28, 2012
Hood River County Fruit Loop
Hood River Valley, Oregon

It’s the height of the harvest season in Oregon’s Hood River Valley, famous throughout the nation and the world for its wonderful tree fruit. The Hood River Heirloom Apple Celebration takes place Saturday and Sunday, October 27-28. The event honors apples now known as “heirloom” or “classic” varieties, which trace their heritage back 100 years or more.

Heirloom apples include old-style and tasty apple varieties such as Spitzenburg, Rome Beauty, Newtown Pippin, Winter Banana and Ortley. They were traditional favorites for mouth-watering apple pies and applesauce. And they were delicious eaten right off the tree, too! Such special apples are still available, though often in limited quantities, and likely not at your neighborhood supermarket. Many people have only heard of them, and have never had the opportunity to actually taste them.

Limited supplies of heirloom apples are available, and while loads of these apples may not be shipped out of the valley, they are available at locations along the Hood River County Fruit Loop during the Heirloom Apple Celebration. Many Fruit Loop farms are offering special activities throughout the weekend.
